Pavane for a Dead Princess, Maurice Ravel (arr. Bockman)

Funeral Song for David Maslanka, Andrew Bockman

Moss Studies is a collection of works for vibraphone and bass that explore themes of nature, solitude, and place. Each of the “moss studies” on the album represent personally significant places or memories – significant both in the complexity of the landscapes themselves and the impact of experiencing them. This work inhabits a liminal space somewhere between the realms of composed music and free improvisation, and seeks to resonate with listeners' own experience of the natural world.

This album is the result of an ongoing long-distance collaboration that has taken various shapes since 2019. All tracks were composed and recorded remotely. Central to this album’s sound world is its tuning, which features a mixed tuning of 12-tone equal temperament in the vibraphone and 31-tone equal temperament in the bass.
